The Social Media Club EDU-Richmond Chapter launched its first shindig – appropriately pegged, Tweet That -- on October 12th in cahoots with VCU’s School of Mass Communications.
Dickerson kicked off the event, which was attended by an of audience of 130-plus – made up of a mixed bag of curious students, professors with fancy titles, and professionals with fancy Twitter handles.
When Trevor Dickerson stepped up to the mic on Monday night it was obvious that things had changed in the ol’ schoolhouse. His professors and fellow students at Virginia Commonwealth University were peppering him with questions -- not the other way around. This is his turf, these are his Tweeple.

The Social Media Club EDU-Richmond Chapter launched its first shindig–appropriately pegged, Tweet That–on October 12th in cahoots with VCU’s School of Mass Communications.

The panel discussion was headlined by Dickerson (@TrevorDickerson) as well as tech phenoms Jolie O’Dell (@jolieodell), Generra Peck (@generrapeck), and Candace Nicolls (@cjsn). Moderating the panel chat on all things social media was Marcus Messner (@marcusmessner), VCU Mass Communications Professor.

Dickerson kicked off the event, which was attended by an of audience of 130-plus – made up of a mixed bag of curious students, professors with fancy titles, and professionals with fancy Twitter handles.

For the traditional media types still pondering the value in social platforms, Dickerson walked the audience through his success as the first to break hyper local news in Richmond, as evidenced by his tweets on the possible sale of Ukrop’s and his coverage of the small earthquake that recently rattled Short Pumpers, where he runs DowntownShortPump.com. His advice, simply “keep it organic and authentic.”

Highlights of the Event's Twitter Stream:

Panelist Jolie O’Dell, a tech blogger of rock star status for ReadWriteWeb and a growing list of other outlets, doled out social media tips of her own such as, “Be the best version of yourself that you can be…you will attract what you project.” O’Dell, who was once primarily known as a video blogger, encouraged the audience to “always be an early adapter…really work to hone your digital tool belt.”

Candace Nicolls, a Recruiting Manager at Ironworks Consulting, provided insight from a hiring perspective, while encouraging audience members to remember to protect their online reputation and to attempt to control content that may appear in search results.

As the panelists shared their perspectives on social platforms, the crowd tweeted additional questions and commentary in typical Social Media Club fashion on a large screen behind the panel that displayed a live Twitter stream hashtaged as #TweetThis.

Nathan Hughes, the programming director for Social Media Club Richmond (SMCRVA), explained, “Our ultimate goal here is to improve the quality of social media education being offered in secondary school.” He says that future events will continue to promote the partnership between SMCRVA and SMCEDU, with a heavy push on including schools from across the region that will collaborate and shape what’s to unfold next.
